Kruger National Park, one of Africas largest game reserves, is home to over 500 species of animals including the Big 5: buffalos, elephants, leopards, lions and rhinos. In the two days we spent in the park, we encountered hundreds of animals. Though we didn't see all of the big 5 (no lions) we did experience a very rare sighting of African Wild Dogs right off a kill.
Watch this short video we made to check out the animals we saw and get a glimpse of our safari experience.....

We recommend flying into Johannesburg, South Africa and getting a rental car from the airport. We spent two days in the city before heading to the park. The drive from Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park is 4-5 hours long and the drive from Johannesburg International Airport to the park is 3-4 hours. The morning you depart, consider leaving very early so you're one of the first in the park and have plenty of time to spend the day driving around looking for animals.
GETTING AROUND THE PARK
The park is HUGE! It is one of the world's largest national parks and you could spend days here....literally (we met folks that had been in the park visiting over 3 weeks). Upon arrival, you're required to stop to register your car where you can pick up a map. A map is crucial for getting around and so you don't get lost. We recommend planning what part of the park you plan to visit before your visit. Because of the vast size Kruger is, it's important to have a plan, especially if you only have a limited number of days to visit. For those with weeks and more time to spare, consider hopping around and camping or getting a hotel in different regions of the park. Certain animals are known to frequent specific parts of the park.
Kruger National Park allows self guided tours and while we took advantage of this we also booked with a guided tour group. There are so many safari options to choose from, but if you're on a budget and glamping is your thing, look no further than Tented Adventures. The crew at Tented Adventures will give you a once in a lifetime, true South African safari experience. The guides are so knowledgeable, the furnished tents were comfy & cozy and the meals the team cooked and served between game drives were delicious. From the moment you arrive at camp until you tear yourself away to return to reality, everything is taken care of… Your camp hosts will greet you with a refreshing welcome drink and then show you to your comfortable safari tent, kitted out with real beds, crisp hotel-grade linen, fans for those hot summer nights and electric blankets if it gets a bit chilly.
Another perk of the tour is winding down the day reminiscing on the days animal encounters with other travelers, surrounding a campfire with a local glass of wine, courtesy of the Tented Adventures crew. The perfect way to end the day!
